EFFECT OF AUDIO, VISUAL MATERIAL AND INTERNET ON THE LEARNING OUTCOME OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
CHAPTER
ONE
Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
This
research work titled “The use of Audio Visual-materials and internet in
computer study on students learning performance” is informed by the prevalent
global wave in the use of educational technology V is the – avis the situation
of junior secondary in Ogun State. Being an experimental research, the study
investigated the use of audio, visual material and internet and equipment in a
typical school computer and evaluated the effect and the outcome of the use of
such technology on the learning performance of students.
There
have been many technological dawns in the last 30 years, during which the
desktop computer and internet have been developed; but there have been similar
dawns throughout the 20th century. Film, radio, records, broadcast
television, audiotape, videotape, programmed learning machines etc. each time
enthusiasts have announced the transformation or even the end of the school, college
and university. In fact, the impact on the bulk of teaching and learning has
been minimal. Developments in paper /printing technologies have had for more
influence, with the consequence that face-to-face discussion and paper
resources still dominate public education. Audiovisual material and internet
have been treated more as icing-on-the cake than as something at the very heart
of learning and likewise their long-suffering support services (through the new
media, particularly video, have fared somewhat better in the development of
corporate training programs). In fact there is a debate in instructional design
literature about whether there are any unique attributes of media that can
promote improved learning.
Audio-visual
education a branch of education technology emerged as a discipline in the 2006s
when film technology was developing rapidly (Hughes 2006). A visual instruction
movement a rose which encouraged the use of visual materials to make abstract
ideas more comprehensible to students. As sound technology improved, the
movement become known as audio visual instruction. Education at that time
viewed audio visuals only as aids to teachers. Not until World War II, when the
armed services used audio-visual materials to train large numbers of persons in
short periods of time, did the potential of these devices primary sources of
instruction become apparent. Blomeyer and Martin (2008) in the 2008s and 2009s,
developments in communications theory and systems concepts led to studies of
the educational process, its elements, and their interrelationship. Hughes (2006)
Amga these elements are the teacher, the teaching methods, the information
conveyed, the materials used, the students, and the students’responses. As a
result of these studies, the field of audio-visuals shifted its emphasis from
devices and material to the examination of the teaching learning.
Education
is a systematic process through which a child or an adult acquires knowledge,
experience, skill and sound attitude. It makes an individual civilized,
refined, cultured, and educated. For a civilized and socialized society.
Education is the only means. Its goal is to make an individual perfect. Every
society gives importance to education to education because it is a panacea for
all evicts. It is the key to solve to solve the various problem of life.
Education, according to Coombs (2008) consists of two components. He classified
these two components into inputs and outputs. According to him, inputs consists
of human and material resources and outputs are the goals and outcomes of the
educational process.
Both
the inputs and outputs from a dynamic organic whole and if one wants to
investigate and asses the educational system in order to improve its
performance, effect of one component on the other must be examined. Audio,
visual materials and internet which are educational inputs and of vital
importance to the teaching of any subject in the school curriculum. Wales (2008)
was of the opinion that the use of audio, visual materials and internet would
make discovered facts glued firmly to the memory of students. Savoury (2008)
also added that, a well-planned and imaginative use of audio-visual materials
and internet in lessons should do much to barish apathy , supplement inadequacy
of books as well as arouse students interest by giving them something practical
to see and do, and at the same time helping to train them to think things out
themselves.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
This
project attempt to highlight the effects of audio, visual material and internet
on learning outcome of junior secondary schools students in computer study in
Ogun State computer has been recognized worldwide over the ages of civilization
as a vital tool for survival particularly in areas of science and technology.
Computer education therefore has increasingly become science and technological
oriented. The 21st century has witnessed as advanced development in
information communication and technology (ICT) through the introduction of
undersea fiber optic cable which link the whole world through the computer
(internet), making the a global village (Deepak and Turner, 2006). Further to
these, there has been an increase in access to computers due to tremendous
advancement witnessed in computer hardware and software engineering which has
resulted in the lowering of the prices of desktop and Laptop computer (Garrison
and Anderson, 2008).
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the
study is to investigate the effect of audio, visual material and internet on
the learning outcome of junior secondary school students.
The
study was guided by the following specific objectives.
i. to
determine the effects of audio, visual materials and internet on learning
outcome of junior secondary school students.
ii. to
determine the challenges students face when using computer in learning
especially in junior secondary schools students.
iii. to
investigate the effect of computer and audio teaching aid on the attitudes of
junior secondary schools students.
1.4 Research Hypotheses
H01 1. There
is no significant different between the students taught with audio-visual
material and those taught with traditional method.
2. There is no significant difference in
learning outcome of male and female students taught with audio-visual
materials.
